With the increasing use of uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) for Airborne Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (AISR) operations, combatant commands require a reliable, flexible, secure, low size weight and power (SWaP) solution for consistent communications coverage to support their missions.

Black ICE Software Defined Radio (SDR) is a modem platform that allows for flexible waveform integration and provides solutions that meet challenging terminal form factor and performance requirements for beyond line of sight (BLOS) communications on crewed and uncrewed platforms, as well as expeditionary Command and Control (C2) operations.

The Black ICE SDR family of products leverage customer-approved special waveforms and accommodates them on Viasat's Global Xpress Ka-band and L-band systems, augmenting U.S. government resources. It supports a rapid development of custom waveforms, prototyping and demonstrations on both commercially-available and custom SDR hardware.

Low SWaP, high-performance terminals

Leveraging the resilient, secure, and easy-to-use L-band network, Black ICE SDR allows for flexible waveform integration and provides low SWaP solutions that meet challenging user terminal form factor and performance requirements for beyond line of sight (BLOS) communications on crewed and uncrewed platforms, as well as expeditionary Command and Control (C2) operations. Initial products include the LAISR ULW, an ultralightweight alternative to Viasat Government’s LAISR family of terminals.

Special waveform service for high-demanding missions

For Ka-band customers, Black ICE can be integrated into standard Global Xpress terminals via G-MODMAN II and Open Platform (OP) modem manager technology to enable the addition of a special waveform service. Through the special waveforms service, U.S. government Global Xpress customers access alternative waveforms to satisfy specific high-demanding mission requirements, such as high data rate and resiliency necessary in congested and contested environments.

Black ICE SDR’s future-forward design approach ensures flexible waveform integration and introduction of new waveforms features so the service can utilize the capabilities of Viasat's next-generation satellites.
