- In honor of Black History Month, we celebrate the contributions of African Americans to the labor force, highlighting their resilience, innovation, and leadership.
- From building his first computer at 13 to leading complex global projects at Viasat, Derrick's journey highlights the importance of embracing challenges and the transformative role of supportive mentors.
Derrick's journey into the tech industry began at the Center for Engineering and Applied Technology. In this magnet high school, he developed a strong foundation in coding, robotics, and advanced mathematics. He then furthered his education by earning a degree in Computer Engineering from Clemson University.
“I enrolled in a program that taught us about the various components of a computer, including the motherboard, hard drive, and RAM, as well as operating systems, specifically Windows '95 at the time. This enriching learning experience sparked my fascination with technology and fueled my interest in the field. I even built my first computer from scratch at the age of 13,” shared Derrick.
Despite the challenging job market during the 2008/2009 recession, Derrick found his true calling at Viasat – where he could apply his skills to hands-on, global projects. He explains, "My passion for computer science and software waned while I was confined to a desk in a cubicle during my internships. However, the opportunity to become a systems integration engineer and to travel the world to install antenna systems reignited my enthusiasm. The chance to design, test, and validate both hardware and software was what ultimately drew me to join Viasat."

One of Derrick's most significant achievements at Viasat was the installation, integration, testing, and sell-off of a 7.3-meter antenna system in under five days – a task that typically required over two weeks and the presence of both an engineer and a mechanic. His innovative approach and problem-solving skills not only saved the project a significant amount of money but also set a new standard for all subsequent programs he would support.
"I had to think on my feet, troubleshoot issues, and ensure everything was done to the highest standard. It was a challenging but rewarding experience that pushed me to my limits and beyond," shared Derrick.
Throughout his career at Viasat, Derrick has held various roles, each offering new challenges and opportunities for growth. He has served as a systems integration engineer, project engineer, systems engineer, and systems integration supervisor before advancing to his current position as test engineering manager. Each role has contributed to his development, allowing him to build a diverse skill set and a deep understanding of hardware and software.
“The idea of using technology to simplify and improve lives has significantly influenced my career path,” shared Derrick.

Mentorship has been a critical factor in Derrick's success and former employees David Stephens and Del Sharpe were an instrumental part of that. He emphasizes, "Their advice has significantly propelled me into my current position. Del emphasized the importance of networking and staying informed about available opportunities, which helped me appreciate the value of building strong relationships in the workplace. Meanwhile, David encouraged me to embrace complex challenges and avoid confining myself to a narrow scope. With his guidance, I took on responsibilities beyond my typical role, which greatly contributed to my professional growth."
Derrick Echols Jr.'s career journey is a testament to how embracing challenges can lead to remarkable achievements and personal growth.
