RBC Signals has developed a proprietary spectrum access platform called Spectrum Trade Orchestration and Resource Management (STORM). In collaboration with Viasat, STORM offers Fractional Channel Subleasing and Dynamic Spectrum Leasing, enabling Service Integrators to deploy cost-effective private IIoT networks with flexible access to 3GPP spectrum.
Fractional Channel Subleasing allows users to sublease only the spectrum they need, rather than leasing an entire 200 kHz channel. This feature is particularly beneficial for applications that require frequent or 24/7 low data rate connectivity, such as those operating at 5-100 kbps. For example, an oil & gas IIoT network subleasing a fractional 60kHz channel (instead of a full 200kHz channel) reporting continuous low-bandwidth sensor data.
Dynamic Spectrum Leasing, on the other hand, is tailored for IIoT applications that do not need 24/7 access to satellite spectrum. IIoT Devices that report data periodically, such as hourly or daily, can benefit from scheduled connections, ensuring that they only use the spectrum when necessary. For example, an agricultural IIoT network might need access to satellite spectrum for just 5 minutes each day, or a utility IIoT network might require access only when a hazard is detected. For these “planned” or “on-demand” spectrum access scenarios, Service Integrators can offer private IIoT networks using Dynamic Leasing.
With the STORM platform, Service Integrators can build private IIoT networks that access the right spectrum at the right time, much like an enterprise accessing a reliable cloud service.
