Galaxy 1 and Viasat accelerate UAV platform into commercial roll-out
11-03-2026
Viasat Velaris is a dedicated satellite communications service for UAVs and Advanced Air Mobility aircraft, enabling you to operate beyond visual line of sight.
CARLSBAD., Calif., November 2, 2026 – Galaxy 1 Communications and Viasat, Inc., a global leader in satellite technology, today announced an agreement to extend Viasat’s Velaris satellite communications services.
Velaris is Viasat's satellite communications services platform for autonomous and uncrewed aviation, bringing together connectivity, operational services, and a growing partner ecosystem. The company is currently scaling Velaris using its highly reliable L-band satellite capabilities to enable next generation aviation: including autonomous delivery aircraft for logistics and medicine, flying taxis, and inspection aircraft for emergencies and industrial applications in remote locations.
Velaris already integrates a wide range of partners, including aircraft manufacturers, operators, service providers, and technology partners. As the ecosystem grows, simplicity, scalability, and collaboration are increasingly important to support new applications.
Following two years of joint development, integration, testing and proof-of-concept activity, Galaxy 1 and Viasat have validated the operational and commercial capabilities required to support production service delivery. The transition establishes a scalable foundation for commercial growth beyond connectivity alone.
The production agreement will see Galaxy 1 provide the partner enablement platform required for commercial growth, including;
- Operational support and commercial enablement – Supporting efficient onboarding, providing provisioning, billing, and reporting to support commercial models.
- Infrastructure and service management – Providing network infrastructure, remote terminal management through Galaxy 1’s RTM platform, and operational capabilities to activate, monitor, configure and manage UAV services, including incident management and service restoration.
- Integration, automation and visibility – Integration, automation and scalability – Enabling API integration with third-party UAV applications and partner platforms, operational visibility and terminal lifecycle management, and increasingly automated, scalable service delivery.
Martyn Durrant, Chief Commercial Officer, Galaxy 1 Communications, said: “Moving into production is an important milestone and a strong validation of the platform we have developed with Viasat over the past two years. Our objective was never simply to provide satellite connectivity, but to establish the operational and commercial infrastructure needed to support a scalable UAV and Advanced Air Mobility ecosystem. This agreement demonstrates the value of that approach and provides an exciting foundation for the next phase of growth.”
Sandeep Moorthy, Senior Vice President and GM, Advanced NTN Solutions, New Ventures at Viasat, said: “Viasat is at the center of a growing ecosystem that is helping shape the future of next-generation uncrewed connectivity services. As Velaris expands, partners need scalable frameworks to deploy, manage, and scale efficiently. This collaboration is an important part of that capability, strengthening the partner network and accelerating services worldwide."
