Troubleshooting Connectivity - Slow Speeds
Why Test Your Internet Speed?
Testing your internet speed helps you understand the performance of your connection.
- Stop All Internet Usage: Ensure no one else in your household is using the internet to get accurate results.
- Visit Speedtest.net and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Download Speed: The rate at which data is transferred from the internet to your device.
- Upload Speed: The rate at which data is transferred from your device to the internet.
- Multiple Users: Other people using the internet can slow down your connection.
- Device Updates: Ensure your operating system and browser are up-to-date.
- Router Placement: Place your router in a central location to improve Wi-Fi coverage.
- Network Congestion: Speeds can be slower during peak usage times, typically in the evenings.
- Viruses and Malware: Run a virus scan to ensure your device is clean.
- Reboot Devices: Rebooting your computer and modem can help improve performance.
Steps to Troubleshoot:
- Check Your Plan: Make sure you haven’t exceeded your monthly High-Speed data allowance, if your plan has one. Consult My Viasat for details about your plan, data allowance, and usage.
- Run a Speed Test: Use Speedtest.net to check your current speeds, as detailed above.
- Stop Other Usage: If speeds improve when others stop using the service, the issue might be with your router or another device on the network.
- Reset your modem: Similar to other electronics, you can reset your modem by unplugging it, waiting a few moments, then plugging it back in. (Or review this Help Center article for additional information and details.)
- Clear Your Browser: Keep your browser up-to-date and clear cache and cookies.
- Check for Outages:
- Verify if there is heavy storm activity affecting the signal.
- Check for network outages on the Customer Care Help Line.

Viasat Unleashed:
- The Viasat Unleashed plan comes with unlimited data. If at any time your data usage is trending to exceed the "typical usage" of a residential customer on our network, you may have reduced priority during times of network congestion resulting in slower speeds. Typical usage represents the data usage of 70% of residential customers on our network. Please visit www.viasat.com/legal to view Viasat’s Unlimited Data Policy for more details.
- To see if Unleashed is available in your area, visit My Viasat and go to Usage and change plans under your plan details. You can view plan options in your area.
