Viasat Fiber FAQs
-
Fiber internet uses fiber-optic cable to provide internet service to homes.
-
The fiber-optic technology is transmitted as light signals and is capable of carrying a greater amount of data at faster speeds than a traditional or coax cable. This means a faster and more reliable internet connection – internet speeds up to 5 Gbps!
-
Viasat Fiber, powered by FiberCity®, brings the fastest and most reliable internet technology through a 100% fiber connection direct to your home. Fiber internet uses thin glass strands or fiber-optic cable to transmit data as pulses of light, allowing it to carry greater amounts of data at faster speeds than traditional cable internet.
-
Unlike hybrid fiber-cable systems that use a mix of fiber and copper wiring, Viasat Fiber delivers a pure fiber-optic connection all the way to your house. This means you'll enjoy endless 4K streaming, seamless gaming, and reliable connectivity on one of the most advanced internet networks built to support all the devices in your smart home—today and tomorrow.
-
Viasat Fiber includes unlimited data with no caps or throttling, Wi‑Fi 6 technology, free standard installation, and reliable 100% fiber connectivity—all with no contracts or early termination fees.
-
Fiber internet works by transmitting data through fiber-optic cables made of extremely thin glass strands. Data travels through these cables as light signals at nearly the speed of light, which allows for incredibly fast and efficient data transmission.
-
The system uses an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) installed at your home, which converts the light signals from the fiber-optic network into electrical signals that your devices can use. Viasat Fiber uses the ONT designed for home networking, which provides dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and can cover areas up to 2,500 square feet with a single unit.
-
Fiber internet is installed by running a fiber optic cable from the main network to your home.
-
A technician then drills a hole to bring the line inside and connects it to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT).
-
The ONT has Wi-Fi capability and will be configured to support Wi-Fi. Additionally, you may connect a 3rd party router via Ethernet if you wish to use your own router.
Superior Speed and Performance:
- Fiber delivers significantly faster speeds than traditional cable internet, with connectivity up to 5 Gbps for both upload and download
- Avoids potential slowdowns that traditional cable and fiber-cable hybrid connections can experience due to outdated copper wiring
Symmetrical Speeds:
- Unlike cable, fiber allows for matching upload and download speeds (1 Gig down = 1 Gig up)
- This improves responsiveness and reduces lags—particularly important for video conferencing, real-time gaming, and live streaming
Greater Reliability:
- Fiber is less susceptible to interference and network congestion, making it more reliable than cable
- Significantly less impacted by environmental conditions, electrical interference, or even peak traffic hours
- More durable than traditional cable—resistant to corrosion, weather, and temperature fluctuations
Low Latency:
- Fiber sends and receives signals at almost the speed of light, resulting in extremely low latency
- Perfect for gaming, streaming, and real-time applications
Future-Ready Technology:
- As homes become more connected, fiber allows for reliable connectivity for all your personal devices (phones, tablets, TVs, computers) and home devices (cameras, appliances, doorbells)
- Built to support the internet needs of today and tomorrow
Yes! Fiber internet offers unmatched reliability. The fiber-optic technology is significantly more stable than cable and less susceptible to interference, providing a consistently reliable connection.
Key reliability features include:
-
Resistant to environmental factors: Not affected by weather, temperature fluctuations, or electrical interference
-
Less network congestion: Maintains consistent performance even during peak traffic hours
-
Durable infrastructure: Resistant to corrosion and physical degradation
-
100% fiber network: Direct fiber connection to your home eliminates the weak points of hybrid systems

Viasat Fiber offers super-fast internet connectivity with speeds up to 5 Gbps for both upload and download.
All plans feature:
-
Symmetrical speeds: Upload and download at the same speed
-
Truly unlimited high-speed data without throttling and no data caps
- Low latency: Ideal for gaming, video conferencing, and streaming
What is symmetrical upload/download speed and why does it matter?
Symmetrical upload/download speeds mean you can upload and download data at the same speed. For example, if you have a 1 Gbps plan, you get 1 Gigabit per second for both downloading AND uploading.
This is a significant advantage because:
- Video conferencing runs smoother with better quality and less lag
- Gaming performance improves with reduced latency and faster response times
- Live streaming is more reliable and higher quality
- Cloud backups and file uploads happen much faster
- Multiple users can work, game, and stream simultaneously without slowdowns
Traditional cable internet typically offers much slower upload speeds than download speeds, which can create bottlenecks for these activities.
No, Viasat Fiber customers are not required to return the Optical Network Terminal (ONT). If you are moving, the ONT can be left onsite for the next resident.
