Reduced size and cost of sensor chip increases possible short range radar applications
Carlsbad, CA – ViaSat USM has expanded the range of applications for its short range radar system-on-a-chip beyond vehicle applications, to traffic management, aeronautical control, and perimeter security. The new sensors measure the position and speed of multiple targets simultaneously in short measurement cycles, supplying finer granularity, higher local resolution, and more accurate information compared to similar products. Because the new radar sensor integrates many components into a single microchip, the product decreases costs, increases detection performance and reliability, and reduces the size of radar systems, enabling radar sensing to be applied to a number of new scenarios.
The range of potential new radar applications includes these examples:
- Traffic management applications such as intersection monitoring, vehicle count, and flow control
- Aeronautical monitor and control for altitude, landing aids, and collision avoidance
- Security for perimeter, rooftop, and area monitoring
“This is the most highly-integrated radar chip on the market and really gives our customers an advantage in affordability and performance,” said Jon Filreis, director of military and space markets for ViaSat USM.
The short-range radar microcircuit operates in the 24 GHz ISM band and communicates information collected from moving or stationary targets through a number of interfaces, including CAN, RS 485, hard-wired power-over-Ethernet, and 802.11g WiFi. Multiple sensors can easily be switched together synchronously in a network and the system works reliably even in adverse weather or light conditions. Five different antenna options allow nearly any field of view, from narrow to wide beam shapes.
