Pro forma net income, which excludes the effects of acquisition charges (including amortization of goodwill and a charge for in process research and development) for the fiscal year 2001 was $14.9 million, or $0.66 per share based on 22.5 million weighted average shares. This is an 87.9% increase over net income of $7.9 million or $0.45 per share for fiscal year 2000 based on 17.4 million weighted average shares. Fiscal year 2001 was an exciting year for ViaSat, said Mark Dankberg, chairman and CEO of ViaSat. Awards, sales and profits for the year were at record levels and we made expected inroads into commercial broadband and new defense related markets. We also believe weve made very good progress over the year in integrating our Atlanta and Carlsbad satellite businesses and earning competitive advantages from our combined strengths. ViaSat ended fiscal year 2001 with sales backlog of $236 million compared to $88 million at the end of fiscal year 2000. Contract awards for fiscal year 2001 were $239 million compared to $119 million in fiscal year 2000. Fiscal Year Business Highlights Some specific highlights from fiscal year 2001 follow:

  • We completed the acquisition of the satellite networks division of Scientific-Atlanta in April, 2001, which gave us the scale and scope to become a larger player in the commercial VSAT market, further strengthened our position in the DAMA marketplace, and added satellite ground systems and gateways to our product portfolio. This acquisition accelerated the growth of our already growing commercial business and gave us the capabilities needed to more effectively capture some of the anticipated growth for broadband commercial satellite communications services and products. Our commercial business has grown from approximately 24% of our revenues in fiscal year 2000 to approximately 62% of our revenues for fiscal year 2001.
  • We earned awards in the three key broadband markets we targeted last year enterprise, consumer and in-flight mobile applications. With recent contract awards from Astrolink to provide gateways and two-way Ka-band terminals for enterprise broadband, from WildBlue Communications to supply satellite modems for residential and small businesses, and with the recent selection of Connexion by BoeingSM for us to provide receiver/transmitter subsystems for broadband service for air travelers, ViaSat has established relationships with key providers in each of these market segments. Our goal is to leverage our advanced technology and capabilities to capture a significant share of the global satellite communications services and equipment segment of the high-growth broadband communications market. These relationships are expected to result in a full family of gateway and user terminal products to enable us to meet our goal, said Steve Cable, vice president of Broadband Systems.
  • We received add on orders from key commercial customers including a $3.5 million order to expand a Skylinx network for telephony services to the Australian outback and a $3.8 million order from SAIC to expand its StarWire network for high speed telecom services for an oil and gas company as part of a global network deployment. These add on orders are significant because they illustrate the ability of our product family to support our customers needs in a variety of markets and applications, said John Restivo, vice president and general manager of Satellite Networks Division.
  • We received a $1.5 million Phase One contract from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and US Air Force Research Laboratories (DARPA/AFRL) for the development of digital communication technologies that build upon the Link-16 Tactical Military Data Link. This award allows us to build on our MIDS technology to develop a new product for a closely related, but different market than MIDS, said Claude Hashem, vice president and general manager of our Communication Systems Group. ViaSat is one of only three certified manufacturers of Link-16 MIDS terminals. The Link-16 MIDS global market has significant technology barriers to entry and is expected to approach $2 billion in revenues over the next eight to ten years.
  • We received formal recognition of our business practices, first being recognized by Lockheed Martin for a second year in a row as one of only 18 Star Suppliers out of its base of 65,000 vendors, and then by Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) with a US government ISO 9001 certification of our Quality System. It is gratifying that customers are also impressed with our quality performance. Although we already received our ISO 9001 certification from Lloyds Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) over 4 years ago, its rewarding to have another independent authority evaluate our corporate quality system and certify it, said Bob Barrie, vice president of Operations.
