Carlsbad, CA - ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq:VSAT) has won a $3.16 million contract from the U.S. Air Force Cryptologic Systems Group to develop cryptographic equipment for the Space Ground Applications in Satellite System (CESGASS). The program requires ViaSat to demonstrate that terrestrial, re-programmable Type 1 communications security equipment, that complies with the tenants of NSA Crypto Modernization, can replace existing/legacy ground equipment.
The system is based on reprogramming the ViaSat KG-250 inline network encryptor with the specific security functions required for the Telemetry Tracking and Control (TT&C) ground operating environment. By basing the system on an existing product, costs are expected to be lower compared to equipment that is developed for space applications only. This KG-250 variant should enable the Air Force to meet its current TT&C security requirements while providing a simplified growth path to a more network centric TT&C architecture.
This award is a new application for our Information Assurance technology, said Jerry Goodwin, vice president of Tactical Networking and Information Assurance at ViaSat. It represents a tremendous opportunity to demonstrate the versatility of our programmable crypto architecture, which can handle both link and network cryptographic functions. This flexibility can help isolated communication stove pipes become more network-centric.
Upon completion of the 12-month effort the Air Force may elect to award a low rate initial production phase in which the resulting cryptographic equipment would be productized and certified.
