UNASAT Communications LLC to Use DOCSIS-based Broadband Satellite System for Data and Voice Services

2006-02-06 - VSAT Networks

Duluth, GA ViaSat Inc. is supplying UNASAT Communications LLC with a DOCSIS-based two-way satellite broadband access network to provide services for the small-to-medium enterprise market. The initial $5 million contract includes a quantity of Ku-band SurfBeam DOCSIS-for-satellite modems, a Satellite Modem Termination System (hub), a 6-meter hub antenna, and RF equipment. The UNASAT SurfBeam network provides seamless access to advanced broadband data and VOIP (voice over IP) services. These services are available through the UNASAT satellite, regional phone company, and ISP dealer network throughout North America.

Our SurfBeam network enables us to cost effectively provide access to our advanced broadband services anywhere that terrestrial networks cant reach or where diversity is required, said Michael G. McLaughlin, president and CEO of UNASAT. We chose the ViaSat DOCSIS-for-satellite network based on ViaSats proven track-record for delivering the most advanced satellite networking products in the industry.

The ViaSat SurfBeam system is an open standard network that leverages the cable modem networking standard called DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications). Coupled with advanced satellite waveforms, SurfBeam lowers the cost of consumer terminals, reduces satellite bandwidth requirements, enables easy self-provision for customers, and provides mature customer service, billing, and network control software to network providers because it is built on a proven technology base.
