Carlsbad, CA – ViaSat Inc. network encryption and tactical data link products played a prominent role in several exercises that were a part of the Joint Expeditionary Force Experiment 2006 (JEFX 06). JEFX 06 is the sixth in a series of large-scale DoD experiments to evaluate new operational concepts, processes, and technologies to fill operational deficiencies. Most of the exercises took place from April 17 to May 5.
Various airborne platforms and ground stations employed ViaSat KG-250 and KG-250A encryptors as part of the successful demonstration of the Tactical Targeting Network Technology (TTNT) experiment at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. KG-250s provided high-performance operation for TTNT demonstrations in AWACS, B-52, Hawkeye E-2C, and Battlefield Airborne Command Node (BACN) aircraft, plus the Antelope Peak ground station, while TTNT demonstrations in F-15 and F/A-18 aircraft used the KG-250A in a rugged fully-qualified airborne enclosure. In addition to the encryptors, the BACN demonstration used ViaSat Multifunctional Information Distribution System Low Volume Terminals (MIDS LVTs) for Link-16 communications.
"ViaSat security and Link-16 products performed well and contributed to the success of the BACN demonstration in JEFX 06," said Mike Twyman, vice president, Northrop Grumman Communication and Information Systems Business Unit, Defense Mission Systems Division.
ViaSat also demonstrated its tactical trusted filter technology at JEFX 06 as part of an experiment featuring the U.S. Army Future Combat System (FCS) program. FCS technologies at JEFX 06 included the ViaSat HAF-200 High Assurance Filter, which can isolate domains between two networks of different classification levels. The HAF-200 is a hardware-based high assurance trusted filter in a PCMCIA card that operators can program with filtering rules to match the control signals/information between two networks. The KG-250 and KG-250A products are compliant with the High Assurance Internet Protocol Encryptor Interoperability Specification (HAIPE IS), the new interoperability specification for military information security products that makes HAIPE devices an essential component for the Department of Defense Global Information Grid. With the recent certification of the KG-255 1 Gbps encryptor by the National Security Agency, ViaSat has three security products in the AltaSec family that feature full compliance with HAIPE IS.
