Carlsbad, CA ViaSat Inc. has obtained a Certificate of Compliance for its LinkStar VSAT system from SatLabs, the group tasked with certifying the interoperability of satellite terminal products using the Digital Video Broadcast Return Channel Satellite (DVB-RCS) standard. The tests verify that the LinkStar broadband satellite terminal complies with the standard and is able to interoperate with other DVB-RCS systems. The LinkStar terminal passed all DVB-RCS qualification tests in one day at the SatLabs certification facilities located at CETECOM in Germany.
Interoperability between terminals and systems is one of the key advantages of the DVB-RCS open standard and contributes to lowering the cost of broadband satellite communications equipment. Customers wanting to take advantage of the standard are able to choose equipment from multiple vendors. Five DVB-RCS terminal vendors have obtained certificates of compliance since testing began last year.
The LinkStar system was designed from the start to be DVB-RCS ready. Since its introduction in 2001, nearly 80,000 terminals and over 120 hubs are installed worldwide, and any of those systems can be configured to DVB-RCS operation through a software download. ViaSat will also continue to offer its own non-RCS LinkStar products for those customers who prefer that system.
The SatLabs Group is an international, not-for-profit association of service providers, satellite operators, system integrators, terminal manufacturers, and technology providers, with the aim of ensuring interoperability between DVB-RCS terminals and systems. The SatLabs Qualification Program was launched in April, 2005 to provide an independent certification process.
