Seamless network management and bandwidth allocation make Skylinx the ideal fit for massive bandwidth requirement

Duluth, GA ViaSat (NASDAQ: VSAT) has supplied a Skylinx digital satellite networking system to HCL Comnet Ltd. for a government project in India under a $2.2 million contract award. The project will augment a terrestrial network with over 100 MHz of satellite capacity dedicated to encrypted voice and data communications. The Skylinx system can seamless manage bandwidth allocation and configuration across the multiple transponders needed to fulfill the project requirements among 40 network locations.

Three full 36 MHz C-band transponders planned for the network, totaling 108 MHz of bandwidth, would make it the largest in India in terms of available satellite bandwidth. Circuits may be allocated for voice or high-speed data up to 2 Mbps in a full mesh architecture (direct, hubless connections). A key attribute of the Skylinx system is its ability to seamlessly manage all the bandwidth with full Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA) channel assignments as if the three transponders were one contiguous quantity of satellite capacity.

The specially designed Skylinx chassis that supports multitransponder use is the right choice for this network, said HCL Comnet vice president Mr. S. Barathy. The RF equipment is also designed to send parameters through the SA bus protocol of the Skylinx monitor and control channel. We can manage remote VSAT RF system parameters, including uplink power, from the hub network management system.

Skylinx connects locations with voice, fax, and data communications using full mesh switching to minimize transmission delays. While satellite bandwidth is usually the largest cost component of satellite communication networks, Skylinx is focused on minimizing use of satellite bandwidth through advanced DAMA technology that assigns satellite channels on-demand and high-performance voice compression as high as 8:1. Users can easily add voice or data channel units to any Skylinx chassis. This new government network will use about 900 channel units at its 40 locations, split between voice and data.
