Terminal delivers unparalleled mobile, secure voice and broadband IP data to tactical warfighters
Carlsbad, CA – ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq:VSAT) received its first order for AN/PSC-14s from the U.S. Air Force 36th Contingency Response Group. The AN/PSC-14 combines Inmarsat IP-based Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) technology with ViaSat AltaSec® IP inline encryption equipment to create a portable, ruggedized BGAN user terminal capable of both secure and non-secure operation.
A tactical “manpack” terminal that fits into a rucksack, the rugged AN/PSC-14 terminal is designed specifically for the military warfighter. Features such as using standard military batteries, compatibility with current handsets, and the ability to locate the antenna several hundred feet from the terminal were incorporated specifically to satisfy military needs not met elsewhere. The Inmarsat BGAN system is the world’s first mobile satellite communications service to deliver simultaneous voice and broadband IP data to a small, portable device on a global basis. The service sends and receives IP data at speeds up to half-a-megabit per second.
The AN/PSC-14 was cooperatively developed with Inmarsat. Coupled with a separate tracking antenna, the terminal can also fit into a standard mount on military vehicles to provide comm-on-the move.
“The PSC-14 has unique features that you won’t find on standard commercial terminals, which give it significantly increased military utility,” said Doug Poorman, ViaSat AN/PSC-14 program manager. “Its ruggedness gives it a level of military reliability that warfighters need for tactical communications.”
