Carlsbad, CA - ViaSat has reached agreement to supply SES AMERICOM with its SurfBeam DOCSIS-based two-way broadband satellite system, enabling SES to expand its enterprise offerings across the region with a low-cost, high performance Internet service. SES AMERICOM will use SurfBeam to provide networking capabilities for service providers, leveraging the flexibility and reliability of the ViaSat DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications) platform. The multi-year agreement includes a high capacity gateway, customer premises terminals, and related support services through the ViaSat Network Operations Center.
"With Surfbeam, AMERICOM Enterprise Solutions can now offer service providers a low cost, high performance managed service that will greatly improve the broadband experience for their customers," said Steven Corda, vice president of product development for SES AMERICOM. "By leveraging the DOCSIS standard, we have a solution designed to meet today's market needs and position SES AMERICOM with the capabilities to serve future market demands."
ViaSat's SurfBeam system is an open standard network that leverages the cable modem networking standard called DOCSIS. Coupled with advanced satellite waveforms, SurfBeam provides fast Internet access while lowering the cost of consumer terminals, using less satellite bandwidth, enabling easy self-provision for customers, and providing mature customer service, billing and network control software to network providers because it is built on a proven technology base.
"With this award, our DOCSIS-based satellite system continues to gain momentum as a new open standard for cost-effective broadband by satellite in the consumer, SOHO and small enterprise markets," said Marc Agnew, vice president of Broadband Systems at ViaSat. "We've built a leading position in virtually every broadband satellite market by tailoring our technology to each market."
