Further Development, Delivery of Three Link Effect Simulator Systems to Follow

Carlsbad, CA – ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq:VSAT) has completed and demonstrated a UHF Link Effects Simulator for Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) that exceeded program requirements by simulating over 70 atmospheric models in testing terminals for the U.S. Navy Mobile User Objective System (MUOS). The Link Effect Simulator models the effects that varying terrain and environmental conditions will have on signals traveling between many user terminals on the ground and the MUOS satellites. MUOS is designed to be a network of Department of Defense satellites and associated ground facilities providing global, narrowband satellite communication services for mobile and fixed-site terminals.

The ViaSat system will become part of the MUOS System Integration Laboratory that Lockheed Martin will use to ensure proper operation of the communications system prior to launch of the satellites and implementation in the field. ViaSat will continue work on the Link Effects Simulator, refining the initial design and building a total of three complete simulators for delivery to Lockheed Martin.

“The ViaSat design is a critical part of our integration and will perform a significant part of the user link demonstrations that make up the MUOS test program,” said E.V. DiMiceli, VP and program manager for MUOS at Lockheed Martin. “This is one of our first victories in demonstrating the hardware to our customer and providing this vital military communications infrastructure to our nation’s military.”
