Smart Digital Communications is First Asia Customer to Inaugurate DOCSIS-based System

Duluth, GA The ViaSat Inc. SurfBeam DOCSIS-for-satellite broadband system is continuing to build momentum as the leading standard for satellite consumer and small business Internet access worldwide. In addition to its success in becoming the fastest growing satellite broadband choice in North America, the recent commissioning of a SurfBeam system by Smart Digital Communications, Malaysia, shows the continued expansion to other regions of the world. Smart is using the SurfBeam system, the first of its kind in Asia, to provide enhanced satellite managed services and networking operations for a new service called Triple Play that will bring IP video, voice and high-speed Internet to homes and small businesses in Malaysia.

Over 150,000 Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS)-based two-way broadband satellite terminals have shipped worldwide, both for Ku-band and Ka-band satellite systems. Combining over 70,000 new subscribers for WildBlue Communications and Telesat in North America, and WildBlues recently announced distribution agreements with AT&T, DISH Network, and DirecTV, the DOCSIS-for-satellite technology has shown itself to be the leading satellite system choice for service providers that want to offer satellite broadband services at prices that make economic sense for more consumers and small businesses. In addition, the legacy of success that DOCSIS has in terrestrial cable services enables a high service quality and customer satisfaction.

The DOCSIS-for-satellite system is a new approach to broadband satellite communications that lowers the cost of consumer terminals, provides mature back office and customer service systems, and helps make satellite a cost-effective medium for broadband delivery. For its ground-breaking work in applying the DOCSIS standard to satellite communications, ViaSat was awarded an Industry Innovator Award by the Society of Satellite Professionals International at the recent Satellite 2006 conference and exposition.
