RF Signal Environment Generation

RF Signal Environment Generation

Generate real-life RF signal activity in a repeatable environment to test communication systems.

A True-to-Life RF Environment in Your Lab
As the world’s RF signal environment grows increasingly complex and diverse, today’s communications systems must be able to perform in the midst of extreme signal depth and diversity.  With ViaSat’s RF Signal Environment Generation, you can ensure your communications systems are ready for the real world before operational deployment.

RF Signal Environment Generation goes beyond simulation to generate a dense, dynamic, and realistic RF environment.

  • Realistic Signal Environment - A simulated environment generating real RF
  • High-Density Signal Environment - Hundreds of independent signals
  • Dynamic RF Environment - Independent signal behavior
  • Behavioral Emitter Models - Coherent signals that react to the environment
  • Independent Platform Motion - 6 DOF motion models
  • Independent Signal Control - Frequency, amplitude, delay, doppler, pulse characteristics, and more...

Real RF Energy.  Real-World Testing.  Real Savings.

ViaSat’s RF Signal Environment Generation creates real-life RF signal activity in a repeatable environment to test communications systems and discover design issues earlier.  This real-world environment enables you to resolve issues before your first flight test, so you can :

  • Save millions of dollars in development, flight test, and deployment costs
  • Speed time to market
  • Optimize system performance
  • Reduce deployment risks

If Your Avionics Survive in the Lab... Then They're Ready for Combat

Systems designers rely on ViaSat’s signal modeling expertise to help successfully launch better avionics and communications systems on time and under budget.  RF Signal Environment Generation can shake out design problems during developmental testing in a true-to-life environment.  Signal scenarios are controlled, repeatable, dynamic, and scalable to help you optimize your system’s performance.  We offer generators for a variety of testing:

  • Unit testing
  • Dense communication testing
  • Surveillance testing
  • Effects of jamming tests

IFF Mark XIIA Signal Testing: Seamless Mode 5 and Mode S System Integration

Designed for testing Identification, Friend or Foe (IFF) systems, ViaSat’s Radio Frequency Generator (VRG-1000) includes 50 IFF interrogator and transponder platforms and is designed in a portable package to bring laboratory testing on-location to your installed or in-development IFF system. The VRG-1000 operates remotely from a computer and includes an intuitive graphical interface that works with most standard web-based browsers, no additional software needed!

With an established library of IFF signals, including Mode 5 and Mode S, and independent control of all transponds and interrogations, the VRG-1000 creates dense, robust, and realistic IFF testing environments.

An Example: The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter

Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems used a Communication, Navigation, and Identification (CNI) Function Stimulator (CFS) for avionics testing of F-35 Lightning II aircraft, also known as the Joint Strike Fighter. The complexity of the avionics systems in state-of-the-art fighter aircraft requires realistic test environments and accurate signal representation. ViaSat RF generators provided a true-to-life CNI test environment and reduced the cost of in-flight testing.

Pilots spend a lot of time managing current avionic systems, but the F-35 enables pilots to concentrate on their missions instead. That capability calls for much more sophisticated offensive and defensive sensors and avionics -- a highly integrated system that required more rigorous RF signal testing. RF environment generation got the testing done without costly flight time.

This CNI Stimulator is an integral part of the Verification and Validation Facility (VVF) for the U.S. Reprogramming Laboratory (USRL) at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.

Why ViaSat?

RF Signal Environment Generation from ViaSat surpasses ordinary simulation and computer modeling techniques to actually generate a true-to-life avionics environment with real signals of RF energy, including RF jamming and background signals. This realistic generation of RF signals ensures the most accurate analysis of communication system performance possible.  ViaSat has been building RF Environment Generators for almost 20 years, and has an engineering staff with over 100 years of experience in developing dense, realistic signal systems.
