SurfBeam 2 Architecture
An integrated satellite ground system enabling fast and cost-effective satellite broadband services to millions of customers worldwide.
SurfBeam® 2 is an innovative satellite networking system designed to optimize the capabilities of next-generation Ka-band satellites. A design based on terrestrial networking standards brings economies of scale, easy customer provisioning, and mature network management options to satellite broadband providers. The tightly integrated system combines the terminal pricing, data speeds, network scale, and management systems needed to deliver a fast web experience that enables a high-speed, media-rich Internet and multimedia satellite experience to compete effectively against terrestrial alternatives such as DSL.

A System Designed for Service Providers
Our integrated management framework simplifies large network operations and the management of subscriber services:
- Definition of usage-based, volume-based, pre-paid time, and pre-paid data service plans
- Customer subscription and billing
- Automated, zero-touch provisioning
- Adherence to end user service level agreements
Satellite bandwidth consumption and system licenses are modular and scalable so expenses and operational costs are proportional to your customer growth and business needs. This makes the service affordable for users and profitable for service providers.
SurfBeam 2 Terminals and Gateways
Satellite User Terminal
Each subscriber location has a SurfBeam 2 user terminal, consisting of a satellite modem (similar to a cable or DSL modem), and a Ka-band satellite antenna with RF electronics. A family of user terminals supports the unique physical, technical, and service requirements of residential, mobile, enterprise, and portable applications.
Satellite Gateway Earth Station
The system of gateways comprising the satellite ground system provides all network services for satellite connectivity and terrestrial access. Each gateway provides a multiservice access network for subscriber terminal connections to the Internet and serves as the central source of many system benefits:
- Integrated web acceleration for high-speed response when browsing or uploading and downloading video, music, and photos
- Integration of elements in the modem, RF equipment, and gateway electronics for lower costs and increased reliability
- Adoption of industry-standard DVB-S2 transmission
- Powerful network traffic processing and management
- Simplified user terminal installation and provisioning
- Complete gateway-to-customer system architecture, but a modular design to fit turn-key network installations or integration into other terrestrial or wireless networks
Sophisticated Network and Customer Management Tools
The Network Operations Center (NOC) provides network and subscriber management of the entire SurfBeam 2 network, with the front- and back-office functions to deliver a broadband service to millions of customers:
- Subscriber and service plan management
- Fault management (i.e., network status and alarms, event correlation, etc.)
- Configuration management Performance monitoring
- Network access security and audit
With the SurfBeam 2 Management Framework, you get a sophisticated suite of tools to allow efficient and effective customer care and service/network management. Our professional services team can conduct thorough testing during system installation and integration to ensure seamless operation.
